Relaxing Penang Trip

The Teoh family was in Penang from Friday night (20 June 2008) to Monday evening (23 June 2008). This trip is a big contrast to the last Penang trip during the Chinese New Year. The CNY trip was stressful.

Before we went back, I asked Seng Chor to call my mother-in-law to boil soup for me. She boiled pig intestine soup, and also cooked my favourite pork with vinegar. She knows that I enjoy barley and gingko dessert. So, she would cook for me each time I go back Penang. I also had bird’s nest. She actually took leave on Saturday and Monday to cook for us. I’m really thankful. She made rice dumpling (‘bak chang’) for breakfast on Saturday. Then, on Monday she cooked the vermicelli noodle soup with pork and egg just for me. Delicious. Jordan ate some too.

On Sunday, we had Dim Sum in Penang Island. I ordered all my favourite Dim Sum – siew mai, pork ribs and char siew pau. Seng Chor and his cousins took turns to carry Jordan because he didn’t want to sit down. I just sat and enjoyed my meal. After breakfast, we rested awhile at the aunt’s house before heading for durian feast at Teluk Kumbar. Yummy! Surprisingly, Jordan also loved it. I didn’t count how many I ate but I did try all the various flavours – from bitter to sweet.

We met with the aunt’s family again for seafood dinner. It is actually a belated Father’s Day celebration. Unfortunately, I couldn’t eat the sumptuous dinner. They ordered fish, crab, clams and prawns. All I could manage were some fried noodles, bun, jelly and coconut. For dessert, I ate a rather big piece of cake baked by Ming Jen’s girlfriend (Adeline) – chocolate with almonds. Yummy!

It was relaxing trip for me because I didn’t have to baby sit Jordan much. Mum-in-law and Seng Chor bathed him. He played and watched TV on his own most of the time. But whenever his cousin Jeffrey was around, they would snatch each other toys. Actually, not just toys, they would fight for the bowl, spoon, fork and even shoes. However, Jeffrey didn’t hit Jordan this time. Jordan was fiercer. He even tried to push Jeffrey. It’s nightmare when the two toddlers were around. They just couldn’t stop snatching from each other. We had to make sure that there was no physical contact between them.

I enjoyed my time with Jordan. When Seng Chor and mum-in-law went out on Monday morning, I gladly stayed at home with Jordan. I could even chat on the msn, check email and Facebook. I also spent time watching the Hong Kong drama series – Forensics II. He would call me every now and then. I would normally reply him with, “Yes, darling.” It was a relaxing time with him. I didn’t have to scold or beat him.

It was almost 5 pm when we left Penang. We normally go back empty handed but always return with a car full of food stuff!

Praise the Lord!

Penang - Good and Bad

On Saturday, we left the house at 6:30 am. Then, we picked up Seng Chor's Aunty at Damansara Jaya and headed straight for Penang. Traffic was quite bad until Rawang. Smoother after that. Then, bad again nearing Ipoh. We had one toilet break, and stopped shortly at Ipoh for brunch. Jordan was manageable throughout the journey. Finally, reached Penang around 1 pm. So, the whole journey took 6 hours - almost twice the usual duration! [Bad]

On arrival, we had prawn mee - specially prepared by my in-laws. It's one of their specialties. Yummy! I had one bowl and Seng Chor had 2 bowls. Even though I normally avoid spicy food but their prawn mee must not be missed. They only cooked it on special occasion - when we are back. Hee! Hee! Actually, it was I who requested Seng Chor to ask them to prepare. So nice of them to agree. A lot of hard work is involved - peel the prawns, grind the shells for the soup, cook the soup with lots of ingredients inside. Hmm...that's a secret recipe. [Good]

Later in the afternoon, my sis-in-law, her hubby and her adorable son Jeffrey - my nephew arrived. Of course, he has grown bigger. He's eyes are bigger too - still look very much like his daddy. He is more active now but still see him sleeping most of the time. Glad to see them again. [Good]

On Sunday, we visited my dad-in-law's paper cup factory in Nibong Tebal. Will upload some photos later. It is in a new location. The place is bigger and looks more organised. After lunch, we went to Pacific Megamall to do some shopping for Jordan. [Good]

Nightmare began...Jordan was restless at night. He woke up every 2 hours. He refused to drink milk/cereal. He didn't want to sleep as well. Just wanted to crawl around. Seng Chor and I had to take turns to accompany him until morning. Because of that, I caught a cold. [Bad][Bad].

On Monday morning, we went to Penang Island with my in-laws. We took the ferry. It was first time for Jordan. [Good] experience for him. On arrival, they took me to see a doctor. I had a slight fever, throat infection, flu and slight cough. I was supposed to rest but...after that, still had to go to Prangin Mall and Gurney Plaza. [Bad]

Jordan slept better on Monday night - from 2 am until the next morning. I didn't sleep well because of my blocked nose. I am still suffering from it. Throat is better, no more fever, but the nose is still unwell. I have finished the flu medicine. Just need to finish up the antibiotic today. [Bad]

We left Penang at around 9 am on Tuesday. Traffic was [good], and we arrived home before 1 pm. We stopped over at the Tapah rest place. I was happy to buy some fruits back. I was sort of craving for the fruit (don't know the name) after eating one from Uncle Wing Cheong. It was bought by Roy in the same place. I think the fruit belongs to the guava family but it's skin is shiny, smooth and reddish. [Good]

So, after all, the trip ended with a [Good] note. Jordan is drinking and sleeping well also. :)

Balik Kampung

Perjalanan jauh tak ku rasa
Kerna hati ku melonjak sama
Ingin berjumpa sanak saudara
Yang selalu bermain di mata
Nun menghijau gunung ladang dan rimba
Langit nan tinggi bertambah birunya
Deru angin turut sama berlagu
Semuanya bagaikan turut gembira

Balik kampung oh oh...( 3X )
Hati girang
Ho ho... Balik kampung (3X)
Hati girang

Terbayang wajah-wajah yang ku sayang
Satu-satu tersemat di kalbu
Pasti terubat rindu di hati
Menyambut kepulangan ku nanti
Perjalanan jauh tak ku rasa
Kerna hati ku melonjak sama
Ingin berjumpa sanak saudara
Yang selalu bermain di mata
Nun menghijau gunung ladang dan rimba
Langit nan tinggi bertambah birunya
Deru angin turut sama berlagu
Semuanya bagaikan turut gembira

Balik kampung oh oh...( 3X )
Hati girang
Ho ho... Balik kampung (3X)
Hati girang

Terbayang wajah-wajah yang ku sayang
Satu-satu tersemat di kalbu
Pasti terubat rindu di hati
Menyambut kepulangan ku nanti

"Balik Kampung" means "Going Back to Hometown". The above lyrics is a song by Sudirman (1954-1992) [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudirman_Arshad] - The No. 1 Asian Singer from Malaysia. It has a very catchy tune. It's played on the radio during the festive season when Malaysians return to their hometown to celebrate with their loved ones.

This weekend, Seng Chor, Jordan and I will be heading north towards Penang - Seng Chor's hometown. Yeah, we are 'balik kampung'. We will leave on Saturday morning and back here on Tuesday. So, we won't be blogging until next Thursday/Friday. Pray for journey mercy and good fellowship with our loved ones. Pray for the protection our home here too.

For those of you who are "balik kampung" as well, drive safely and God bless you all.

Penang with a Difference

We're back!

We (Seng Chor, Jordan and I) left for Penang on Wednesday (30/8/06) night, and arrived there past midnight. On the way, we saw fireworks - it was a beautiful sight. It reminds me of the spectacular fireworks that Seng Chor and I saw in Disneyland, Hong Kong.

On arrival, we were warmly greeted by the whole family - my parents-in-laws, sister-in-law Li San, sister-in-law Huey Pin & her husband Danny, and of course, our adorable nephew Jeffrey (previously known as Preston). Jordan was happy to see them. All of them took turns to carry him. It was not a surprise to me that he was comfortable with all of them They were quite surprise, because at this age, babies are normally quite sticky because they can recognise people.

The next day, which is Merdeka Day, the whole family (9 of us) went to Penang Island. We walked around in Prangin Mall. Finally, went to Starbucks Coffee.

Friday was visitation day. Baby Jeffrey has just turned one month old. So, 6 of us (Seng Chor, myself, ma-in-law, Huey Pin and the 2 babies) went round the relatives' home to distribute full moon gift packs. Jordan will share the details of the visitation in his blog.

Saturday was visitation day as well. This time is for Danny's relatives in Penang Island. One of his relatives gave us a wonderful durian treat. Yummy! This time, we didn't offer it to Jordan. After that, we went to town. One of the shops we visited was Hobi-Sports to see diving gear. Ironically, Seng Chor didn't buy anything but I bought. It was what I have always wanted - an army Swiss knife with scissors. Yeah!

On Sunday morning, we had dim sum in Penang Island with Uncle Tong, Xian Ko (pa-in-law's youngest sister) and their son Ming Wei. Before returning Butterworth, we visited their home. After lunch at home, Seng Chor, Jordan, Li San and parents-in-law went to Carrefour. We left for Bandar Utama after dinner around 7 pm.

Overall, I had a good time - did a bit of shopping, had my favorite fruit, visited relatives, enjoyed ma-in-law's cooking. Most thankfully, Jordan slept through the whole night every night in Penang. He must be really tired after being out the whole day. One significant thing that I did was to pray for the relatives as I carry the presence of God into each home. May God bless them. May they called upon the name of the Lord and be saved.
